Treatment of Electroencephalographic Status Epilepticus after Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (TELSTAR) trial

Testing the effect of anti-seizure treatment in comatose patients after cardiac arrest with electrographic ‘status epilepticus’.

Whether treatment of rhythmic and periodic electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns in comatose cardiac arrest patients improves outcomes has long been uncertain. In the multicenter randomized controlled TELSTAR trial, the incidence of a poor neurologic outcome at three months was similar in groups with (intervention group) and without anti-seizure treatment to suppress rhythmic and periodic EEG activity for at least 48 hours (control group). In the subgroup of patients with non-GPD rhythmic and periodic EEG activity (electrographic seizures, evolving patterns, rhythmic delta activity), treatment in the intervention group was possibly associated with a smaller risk of poor outcome.
